Introduction

The Laboratory for Atmospheric Research was formed within the Department of Physics and Materials Science to consolidate research efforts in the Department related to the earth's atmosphere.  Currently, research is focused on the following areas.

(a) typhoon studies: physical processes of typhoon movement and intensity change, changes in wind and rainfall distributions associated with typhoons making landfall, application of the concept of chaos in predicting typhoon movement

(b) monsoon studies: relationships/interactions between winter and summer monsoons, onset and evolution of the South China Sea summer monsoon, evolution of the East Asia summer monsoon

(c) climate studies: seasonal variation/prediction of typhoon activity, interactions between Asia/Australian monsoons and El Nio, regional climate prediction for South China

(d) Atmospheric remote sensing and satellite measurements:
